IPTG, Dioxane-Free (isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside), is an inducer of beta-galactosidase activity in many bacteria. Functioning as a lac analog, IPTG induces beta-galactosidase activity by binding to and inhibiting the lac repressor. This product is used to differentiate recombinants from nonrecombinants in cloning strategies using vectors containing the lacZ or lacZ alpha-peptide gene.
